Global Empowerment Theatre (GETheatre) is looking for teaching artist interns for our summer 2012 program in Zanzibar (East Africa).

GETheatre has been working in Zanzibar since 2006, providing secondary school students with intensive English literacy training workshops using devised theatre techniques.  Typically programs run for two weeks at each school and involve facilitating a group of 20 – 25 students through dramatic activities towards devising a performance. The students write and perform their own work based on their life experiences and dreams. In addition, we mentor and train local teachers during the course of the workshop so that they can continue to implement these techniques in their own classrooms. The workshops are highly structured and disciplined, teaching participants valuable skills in verbal and written communication, as well as offering them an opportunity for creative exploration.

Interns can expect to act as assistant teaching artists: work independently with small groups of students, work one-on-one with students to improve writing skills, typing up scripts, running errands, and offering their enthusiasm to learn and jump in where ever help is needed. This is an incredible opportunity to gain practical experience working in a developing nation, while utilizing theatre to explore identity, facilitate English literacy, and develop cross-cultural connections.

Costs generally average $5000 (airfare, visa, housing, vaccinations, and administrative fees).

Dates: Currently planning specific dates, however this will take place over three weeks in mid-June/July.

Application: If you are interested in this unique opportunity to work with GETheatre in Zanzibar, please send a 500-word statement explaining why you would be a good candidate, your CV, and a 20-minute activity that you would be interested in facilitating for this population to info@getheatre.org by January 15th.
