GETZanzibar 2012 gets going!

Zawadi, a student from GETZanzibar 2008 & 2010, (pictured above) is now employed by Zanzibar’s thriving tourism industry as a concierge in one of its premiere hotels.

In 2006 Jennifer Holmes and John Socas, GET’s founders & directors, led a workshop with students in one of Zanzibar’s many villages, striving to provide them with a singular opportunity to express their ideas while improving their English literacy skills. Now, six years later, Global Empowerment Theatre has embarked on another year of programming in Zanzibar. This is our 4th collaboration with the students at Kiembe Samaki Secondary School.

Ashley Olson, a core member and Head Teaching Artist at GETheatre, is leading this year’s teaching artist interns, Taren Hastings and Yosefa Forma, in our workshops with Kiembe Samaki’s remarkable students.

We couldn’t be more excited to share the experiences of this year’s GETZanzibar students with you! You can follow our updates on twitter @GETheatre by searching #GETZanzibar2012. You can also find our updates by checking out our page on Facebook.

The year 2012 has been an exciting year for us. We completed our second year of programming in Bangalore, India, in January 2012, as well as a teacher training workshop in Myanmar, Burma in May 2012. Stay tuned for more information on the success of our teacher training workshops in Myanmar!
