I hope that everyone has a memory of a time in their life when they felt like a champion. When our team won the championship soccer game my senior year of high school, I remember we all felt like astronauts who had just walked on the moon. Many years later, I remember the pride and sense of accomplishment so vividly, my heart races as I recall the moment and write this.

The students we serve with our programming have had challenging lives and in impoverished communities around the world moments of triumph can be elusive. When the students in our workshops write a play in English about their lives, hopes, and wishes for the world and then present this play for their school, friends, family, and community we see on each of their faces the pride and satisfaction of a champion. They step off stage after their extraordinary performances of their own writing, and they look as if they are returning to earth after seeing the stars.

We need to champion these young people. It takes a lot of guts to step onto a stage and speak from the heart your own words to the people in your life who matter the most. It is incredibly satisfying to know your voice has been heard by the people who mean the world to you.
